How to Get Rid of Acne Scars Naturally?

Acne is best described by the clogging of a skin pore due to the combination of three important elements: natural skin oil (plug of sebum), bacteria (microorganisms) and dead skin (cellular debris). They all fill up a hair follicle creating a blackhead. Blackheads may be open or closed, many or sparse, with no inflammation or deeper inflamed nodules marking the different grades of acne vulgaris, known as common acne.

At a certain phase in our lives beginning in the teen years our sebaceous glands stimulated by hormones become overactive causing increased production of the fatty substance in our skin (sebum). When bacteria from the dirty environment sticks to our skin pores where the natural oil sebum comes out and gets covered up by dead skin cells, they cause clogged pores. When left untreated, those clogged skin pores where bacteria is trapped could be inflamed creating a more difficult condition to manage and cure, and unfortunately leading to acne scars.

Below is a short video that explains how sebum can be trapped underneath your skin. I recommend you to watch it also because it shows you the layers of skin and how it looks like underneath that protective wrap we all are covered with.

Now we have a better understanding of how acne is formed, now if you seek to learn how to get rid of acne scars naturally keep reading. First let's overview what could be causing your acne and how we get the scars.

Why Do We Get Acne Scars?

The real reason for Acne is not known. It's believed that 80% of the cases is genetic based.

Although diet doesn't seem to be heavily related to stimulate the sebaceous glands to overproduce sebum, lifestyle and stress factors tend to affect the appearance of or to increase acne breakouts.

Hormonal change in the body during puberty plays a big role when both genders produce high levels of androgen (testosterone) signaling the body to make more sebum. A very big percentage, close to 80-90%, of teenagers suffer from acne.

Although picking up pimples could cause scars or could lead to acne scars, this is not the main reason to have scarring. Some acne lesions simply seem to be more prone to scarring. When inflammation is trapped underneath the skin with no way out, it will cause more destruction within the skin layers. As a result of the inner skin damage the collagen as well as the elastic tissue are not able to regenerate completely.

Acne scarring scheme

After your acne is gone marks will appear in a different color than your skin tone and will most likely heal within minimum six months. But acne scars are different than marks. They are deep indentations that are not easy to treat.

Prevent if you can! Treat if you have! Do not let acne scars happen!

Since inflammation occurring within the dermal layer of skin will most likely cause scars, early and fast acne treatment is advisable to lessen the overall long-term impact on individuals. Getting your acne under control from the start is the best gift one can give to herself so that you don't have to deal with lengthy and expensive treatment methods. Many treatment options are available to cure acne including lifestyle changes, procedures, topical applications and medications. Light therapy and laser therapy are not considered to be first-line treatments. They are costly options and should be looked into in case more common topical applications did not work.

One thing you have to be aware of during your break outs as well as while treating the scars and marks you have to use ingredients or remedies that would moisturize and exfoliate your skin and that also have astringent properties to contract the skin and make the pores smaller.

lemon juice

Lemon Juice - This acidic juice packed with vitamin C is a great agent to lighten not only acne scars but also blemishes, swollen pimples, freckles, dark spots etc. Collagen is an important element for the regeneration of new skin cells, so in addition to topical applications taking vitamin C internally will also help your body produce clear, new skin tissues.

Squeeze fresh lemon juice and apply on your scars with a help of cotton ball. If you're using your hands make sure that they are clean and free of bacteria. Wash it off after 10-15 minutes, and repeat the process twice a day using fresh lemon juice each time. Within 2-3 weeks you should start to see considerable fading of your scars.

Caution with lemon juice: 1. If your skin is very sensitive dilute lemon juice.  It's important not to irritate the skin further during scar treatment. 2. The citric acid in the lemon can be very drying on the skin. Be sure to moisturize after each citrus application. 3. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight especially when you have the lemon juice on your skin since the acid and vitamin C will make your skin sensitive to sun’s rays causing further damage.

Tips for lemon juice: You can mix fresh lemon juice with following ingredients for a more effective scarring treatment: raw honey, almond oil, vitamin e oil, coconut oil. These are all natural products that have antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Other acidic ingredients: You can use diluted organic apple cider vinegar, raw ripe tomatoes, and apply them directly on your scars and make sure to wash off after each application.

aloe vera

Aloe Vera - This plant that you can grow in a pot or in your garden is quite miraculous. It contains agents that rejuvenate and moisturize the skin. There are tons of aloe vera products in the market and online, but it's best to use the fresh gel that comes from a broken leaf.

Cut off its green skin carefully to release the gel and apply directly on the affected area of your skin. Let it dry, and you don't even need to wash it. You can also cut the leaf open and sprinkle  a thin layer of sugar on it and rub it on your acne scarred skin. This will be a great exfoliator and will get rid of the dead skin cells as well as the scarring cells.

Tips for aloe vera: You can add a few drops of tea tree oil into the gel before rubbing it. Tea tree oil is an excellent antiseptic, antibacterial, anti fungal and antiviral essential oil that has been use to heal many skin conditions, but since it;s very potent it should be used with precaution.

During your acne and scar treatment, make sure:

To stay out of the sun: Exposing scars to the sun can cause them to darken and slow the healing process. Try to stay away from the sun from 10 AM to 5 PM.

To use sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher: It's imperative to apply sunscreen before heading out and every two hours in case of swimming or sweating. Prefer products that offer broad-spectrum protection. Also use appropriate clothing including wide brimmed hat.

Not to pick or squeeze leads: This will interrupt the healing process and damage your skin even more. You're not releasing anything from your pimple or scar by squeezing it, you're just making the inflammation worse. Not to mention the bacteria you will "donate" from your hands to your acne prone clogged pores!

Not to use: Abrasive products and methods on your skin, hot water or rough facecloths when you clean your skin. we can't emphasize enough the extra care and attention you have to show not to irritate your skin.

To drink plenty of water: Keep your skin moisturized from inside out too. Have a balanced diet full of vitamins A, C and E that are particularly important for your skin's overall well-being.

To exfoliate once but not more than 2-3 times a week: This process will wipe off the top layer where the dead skin is accumulated. You do not want to do it excessively because it might dry out your skin, and this is not something that should happen during acne scar healing process.

To be patient: A few weeks after the skin breaks out and scars, new blood vessels start to reach the damaged area to provide nourishment; that's the reason why most early scars or marks appear pink. Only several months later, collagen starts to form filling in the injured layers of  the skin.  Cystic acne in fact destroys skin and fat,  and realistically it can take up to a year for the scars to start to fade.
